The Great Montezuma

The Great Montezuma by Joseph O’Kane Foster, 1940, Ranchos Press. The prose poem, recounting Spain’s conquest of Mexico, was designed by Foster’s neighbor, surrealist painter Thomas Benrimo. In an attempt to heighten the reader’s experience through color, Benrimo used a rainbow of dazzling papers as a backdrop for the text. The book was hand set and printed by Foster on a platen press.
