Characterized by its clamshell action, this press was designed to do small job-printing and evolved over a period of time beginning in the early 19th century. New York printer George Phineas Gordon is attributed with some of the most important platen press developments.

Used at Amaranth Press, Clark’s Studio, Desert Rose Press, The Laughing Horse Press, The Lightning Tree, Motive Book Shop, Pictograph Press, The Press of the Palace of Governors, Ranchos Press, The Rydal Press, Seton Village Press, Stagecoach Press, and Thistle Press.
